FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Airfares are up, hotel rates are up, gas prices are up, but at least one travel item costs less this Thanksgiving holiday than last: renting a car.
The average cost for car rentals will be $37 a day, down 11 percent, predicts travel club AAA.
Customers already are finding bargains.
New Jersey resident Chris Holko and three pals paid less than $20 a day for a full-size car at Enterprise at Fort Lauderdale airport for their five-day rental to attend NASCAR races last weekend.
Holko booked the rental online several months ago when he saw a good deal. He usually pays $30 to $40 a day when he rents last-minute to drive from Fort Lauderdale to his Palm Beach Gardens home.
The men said $20 a day was reasonable when split among four men. “You can’t even get a tank of gas for that,” said Joe Farinella, 41, of Hazleton, Pa. Yet “it’s a good chunk of money” if you’re paying on your own to bring the family on vacation, added Neal Johnson, 39, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
