Sales of new vehicles by Austin-area dealers continued their upward trend in October, jumping 7.6 percent over the same month in 2010, an industry survey shows.
It was the third consecutive month that Austin dealers reported a year-over-year sales increase, according to data from the Freeman Auto Report, a Dallas-based firm that tracks new-car registrations.
Area dealers sold 6,975 new vehicles last month, compared with 6,483 in October 2010, according to the report, which tracked sales in Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, Burnet, Blanco and Caldwell counties.
The most popular vehicles among Austin consumers in October were Ford pickups, with 779 sold during the month. Those were followed by Chevrolet pickups, with 568 sales; Ford cars, with 495; and Hyundai cars, with 461.
Alan Cirota, general manager of Jaguar Land Rover Austin, said "business has just been going crazy" at his dealership.
"Business is good, traffic is good, and what inventory I have is selling," said Cirota, who is also vice president of the Austin Automobile Dealers Association. "We're actually having some problems getting inventory. But that's not just a local problem; it's a national and global problem."
